Name: Shayla Jamerson aka ShaylaBang Age: 34 Job Title/Position: Makeup Aritst, Jewlrey Designer, Wardobe Stylist Education: Some College Q: How did you break into your industry or get stared? A: I started in the industry about 8 years ago, that is when I found my love for the Arts. I started as a freelance Makeup artist working gigs around my local city of Oakland, Ca and also other ares in the BayArea as well as LA. I committed to Mac Cosmetics artist for 5 years as a permanent artist. I started a Jewelry company alongside my best friends in 2008 called Headbanger Accessories which was very successful at the time. Our work could be seen on a numerous amount of celebrities such as Tamar Braxton, Eva Marcille , Chaka Khan, Dawn Richards and more. In my position as Creative Director I began to find my passion as a wardrobe stylist which I loved and enjoyed because I already have a great fashion sense and I love expressing myself through clothes. I just recently moved to ATL 5 months ago from Oakland, Ca hoping to expand my career a little bit further. I plan to travel and use my talent as far as I can reach them. Q: What is your inspiration? A: My inspiration is my Grandfather. He isn't an artist but he is a hard worker who has always taken care of his family. I admire his strength and when things need to get done he has always made things happen and never complained. His worth ethic drives me to work hard and inspires me to always be myself and a better me everyday.
Q: What has been the hardest part of what it is you do? A: The hardest part in being an artist is trying to balance my passion and stability. I am actually writing a entry to blog on ARTISTRY vs STABILITY because it is something that artist face daily. We want to live and do what we want and love but we also need to be able to survive financially. I have had a hard time trying to take on " normal " job and work a 9-5 because it takes away from my time to be creative. Expressing myself brings me happiness and that is what is most important to me. I may not have all the money in the world right now but I believe that I will have a chance to be financially stable doing what I love. The hardest part is having patience but everyday I work hard to make sure that I DO.
Q: What has been your biggest achievement thus far? A: My biggest achievement so far has to be the feature with my company HEADBANGER ACCESSORIES in Essence Magazine and BlackWomanStyle Report magazine. I was really proud that we were recognized as a thriving and fashionable company
Q: What advice would you give to someone trying to get his or her foot in the door?
A: I would say for every 10 No's there is a Yes so do not get frustrated when things do not happen your way right away. Do not be afraid in the beginning of your career to do things for trade so you area able to build up your portfolio, but always make sure you know your value and worth. Every opportunity is not a good one so choose them wisely. Not only are you trying to develop yourself in your profession but you are building your reputation and brand so always be professional. Q: What projects are you working on (that you can share)? A: Well I can not go into too much detail but I am planning on opening up a store in the next year in a half once I move back to California. I just want something small that focuses on new and used clothing. I am about giving back to my young women and teaching them how to respect themselves and what better way to do that then do it in the city I am from. The BANG brand is all about confidence and loving who you are. We have to be positive role models to our little girls because one day they will be little women. Change begins with us
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? A: I see my BANG brand being reached nationally and I see my store thriving. I plan to one day have a makeup line of my own but I am patient and as long as i put my energy into one thing at a time everything will happen. I am just blessed and thankful that i am able to do what I love daily
