Kim Palmer, Owner of 5Fourteen Hair

Name: Kim Palmer

Age: 26

Job Title/ position: Owner/Master Cosmetologist of 5Fourteen Hair Salon and 5Fourteen Hair Extensions

Education: Columbus Technical College Cosmetology Program

Q: How did you break into your industry?

A: I broke into this industry at age 11. I used to shampoo for my aunt in her salon. Thats what sparked my interest in hair. I've been involved in the hair industry in some form or fashion since.

Q: What is your inspiration?

A: My inspiration is my grandmother. She passed in 2006 but taught me so much growing up about respecting others and always loving with a pure heart. She taught me humility. She was so humble and real. I live everyday hoping I make her proud.

Q: What has been the hardest part of what it is you do?

A: The hardest part about what I do is staying abreast of current hair trends. This industry is constantly evolving so I'm always taking classes to make sure I don't miss a beat.

Q: What has been your biggest achievement thus far?

A; My biggest achievement so far has definitely been opening my salon. When I graduated high school I wrote all of my life goals on a piece of paper and one of them was having my own salon. To see that dream flourish seems unreal at times but God is so real and it's all thanks to Him.

Q: What advice would you give to someone trying to get his or her foot in the door?

A: The advice I would give to someone trying to get their foot in the door would be to just stay focused. So many people will doubt your dreams along the way and there will be distractions and setbacks but just REMAIN FOCUSED. If you have to, use those things as motivation to keep you going and not hold you back. Also never stop working. Success is a journey, not a destination.

Q: What projects are you working on (that you can share)?

A; I have a few projects in the making. I can't tell them all lol but I can share that I would like to offer classes to stylists in the surrounding areas. I have so many people I've connected with in this industry in other cities and states and I would love them to bring their talents to Columbus for other stylists to learn. I'm always down for growth and learning.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

A; In 5 years I see myself still enjoying the salon life and having 5Fourteen Hair will be an even bigger brand. I'm working on my new checklist now (haha).
